Travian Hero Consumables Guide
When to use, save or sell hero consumables: Artwork, Bandages, Books of Wisdom, Buckets, Scrolls, Ointments, Cages and Tablets of Law.

Introduction
Hero consumables are single-use items that provide an immediate benefit through your hero. Unlike permanent hero equipment, consumables are spent when used.
Their real value depends on when you use them, the stage of the server, your account type, and their alternative auction value. Consumables can come from hero adventures, the auction house, guaranteed early-adventure rewards and Daily Quest rewards.
The key principle is that receiving a consumable does not mean you should immediately use it. Depending on your account, it may be better to use it, save it for a tactical situation, or sell it for Silver.
Artwork
Artwork is primarily an expansion and tempo item. It provides Culture Points based on the account's Culture Point production, subject to applicable game limits.
For a high-spending account, Artwork can accelerate access to additional villages and help create an economic snowball. For a low-gold or free-to-play account, early Artwork may instead be extremely valuable at auction.
Before consuming Artwork, check your Culture Point equipment. Where the Culture Point helmet contributes to the production used by the Artwork calculation, equip the strongest applicable version first.
Small Bandages and Bandages
Bandages preserve troops. Small Bandages can recover up to 25% of eligible troop losses and regular Bandages up to 33%, provided enough bandages are available. They must be carried by the hero for the relevant battle.
For active fighting accounts, recovered troops represent resources and training time that do not have to be spent rebuilding the army. Expensive units therefore provide greater economic value per recovered troop.
A useful tribe comparison uses equal-sized hammers: 10,000 offensive infantry plus 4,000 offensive cavalry. For Spartans, the example can use Twinsteel Therions and Corinthian Crushers. The resource value of recovered troops depends on the unit costs in your Travian version.
The Hospital is a separate recovery mechanic. Bandage recovery and Hospital wounded troops should not be treated as the same pool, although both can reduce permanent losses.
Book of Wisdom
The Book of Wisdom resets the hero's allocated attribute points so they can be redistributed. This allows the hero to change roles as the account's needs change.
If additional Books are available, repeated respecs can be worthwhile for competitive accounts. The early adventure sequence also provides a Book of Wisdom, giving low-gold players an early respec opportunity.
Bucket
A Bucket instantly revives a dead hero. Its strategic value is hero uptime.
Early in the game this is particularly useful for aggressive oasis farming, adventures and other hero activity. Later, it can restore the hero immediately after a major battle.
Buckets can also support advanced deception strategies where the hero is used in misleading or fake movements. A Bucket therefore buys hero availability, not merely convenience.
Scrolls
Scrolls grant Hero Experience. Their advanced value is controlling exactly when the hero levels up.
If an oasis-farming hero is low on health but close to the next level, Scrolls can supply the remaining experience needed to trigger the level-up and associated health restoration, potentially saving Ointments or a Bucket.
This can be combined with experience-enhancing hero equipment and combat XP. Players who do not need the XP can instead consider the Scrolls' auction value.
Ointments
Ointments restore hero health. Their best use is purposeful healing rather than automatically keeping the hero at 100%.
Use them when the restored health enables another valuable action, such as another oasis clear, raid or important battle.
Before consuming many Ointments, check whether a nearby level-up, combat XP or Scrolls could solve the same problem more efficiently.
Cages
Cages allow the hero to capture animals from an unoccupied oasis. Captured animals can provide defensive strength in the hero's village. Oasis animals do not provide anti-scout protection.
Suppose an oasis contains Rats, Spiders, Crocodiles, Tigers and Elephants. Captures proceed through the available animal types in sequence and repeat while cages and animals remain.
With one cage, the first available animal is captured. A later trip begins the capture sequence again from the beginning of the animals then available; it does not continue from the previous trip.
With five cages and all five types available, one of each is captured. With six cages, one full rotation is completed and the sixth cage starts the next rotation.
If an animal type runs out, it drops out of the rotation. For example, if there are plentiful Rats, Spiders, Tigers and Elephants but only three Crocodiles, a 20-cage batch can include Crocodiles during the first cycles. Once all three are captured, later cages rotate through the remaining animal types.
The strategic goal is defense per cage. Crocodiles, Tigers and especially Elephants are high-value targets. An oasis with fewer weak animal types may therefore be more efficient than a large mixed oasis.
If an oasis has been cleared and strong animals, especially Elephants, are spawning without many weak animals ahead of them, it can be an excellent cage opportunity.
Plan where the cage count ends in the rotation. If the next cage simply restarts the cycle on a weak animal, it may be better to save that cage for another oasis.
Tablets of Law
Tablets of Law increase loyalty in the hero's home village and can build a loyalty buffer above 100%, up to the applicable maximum of 125%. This makes a village harder to conquer and also allows loyalty to be restored during chiefing pressure.
An advanced technique is deliberately stopping at 124% rather than 125%. At maximum loyalty, the interface may no longer offer the same immediately accessible loyalty-increase interaction. At 124%, the interaction remains available.
If an administrator train is expected and the player is online, the relevant Tablet interaction can be kept ready. After an administrator reduces loyalty, Tablets can be used before the next landing. Even a small amount of restored loyalty between tightly timed waves can alter how many successful administrator reductions are required.
The purpose of 124% is therefore not the missing 1%; it is interface readiness. This is a reactive technique requiring the player to be online, anticipate the attack and react between waves.
Final Strategy Summary
Hero consumables are not simply items to use whenever they appear. Their strength comes from timing.
Artwork controls economic tempo. Bandages preserve trained armies. Books of Wisdom change the hero's role. Buckets protect hero uptime. Scrolls control level timing. Ointments turn health into continued activity. Cages reward understanding capture rotations and defense per cage. Tablets provide both a loyalty buffer and an active anti-chief tool.
Don't ask only what a consumable does. Ask what that consumable is worth at this exact moment. Sometimes the best decision is to use it, sometimes to save it, and sometimes to sell it for Silver.
